Josh’s code

May 5, 2006 at 3:34 am | In Science | Leave a Comment

Strangely, I can only get half of this on the blog–is there some place where I can change the text size? Well–go to Josh’s blog for the rest!

Here’s the code Josh wrote for Secret Garden:
global [val0 val1 val2 val3 val4 val5]

to powerup
Write portb-ddr $00 ;set all of portb as outputs

loop[
setval0 (read-ad 0) ;sets value of photoresistor to variable valX
print val0
wait 2
setval1 (read-ad 1)
print val1
wait 2
setval2 (read-ad 2)
print val2
wait 2
setval3 (read-ad 3)
print val3
wait 2
setval4 (read-ad 4)
print val4
wait 2

if (val0

Here are a few photos of how things looked on April 27th ’round midnight…

where we are…

Let’s see–we’re having a few technological glitches–something to do with the amplification of the sound (I think)–Josh has this under control and I don’t expect it to be a problem. The programming of the chip seems relatively simple since Invisible Drum guys posted their code. So, what remains–I have to build the wall–I looked at the space again last night and I would guess that the wall will be approximately 8′ x 12′–so, 3 sheets of foam (@22.00/sheet) and thousands of flowers–I think I have enough flowers (hope I do)—I’m anxious to begin–and I guess I will start by unsoldering the flowers I had already prepared–the wires seem to be touching–I can solve this by either shrink wrapping the wires before I insert them into the flowers–or even easier, just separate the wires and stick them directly into the foam–I’ll think about that some more.

The wall will look like this (if you imagine this many times larger):

In the upper left corner there’s a pink flower with a photosensor in the center–can’t see it, can you?

project begins

Yesterday Josh and I got together and did a few of the mechanical chores necessary for this project (I should say Josh did the hard stuff)–recording more (and different) sounds on the chips, hiding the photosensors in flowers (I soldered leads on them today–still need to tape them)–then Josh figured out the wiring on the crazy, thrift store motherboard–pretty cool! Better than all of that, though–Josh plays a mean game of table tennis–now that’s exciting!

another cool lab day…

It doesn’t take much to get me excited in the lab–because I am such a simpleton when it comes to technology, every little thing looks like a miracle! We (today that meant John and Muaz) recorded more bird songs on my voice recorder chips and on the old ones that Tom found in the thrift store. Tom’s are 1416’s and mine are 1420’s so I guess the only difference is mine record for 20 seconds, his for 16–but it looks like I can use that whole thrift store find and save a bunch of time. Anyway–I also used a program called Audacity that I liked very much–think it will be useful in the future.

Here is part one–Josh will do part two which will show a block diagram with parts info, etc.

What we need…

March 8, 2006 at 5:07 am | In Art, Science | Leave a Comment

to make our piece–now retitled “Secret Garden”–I’m just guessing now because my meeting with Josh and Muaz would have been during class time on Thursday–I’m truly bummed to remember that I won’t be here for it–need to make a quick trip to Kansas City to pick up some art work–anyway–we need at least 5 voice recorder chips, several photosensors, a rheostat–and a computer, I think. How they’ll all go together remains to be seen!

Yesterday’s lab proved quite fruitful for me–finally, after two years, I have a voice recording chip with recorded sound on it! Tom and John are to be congratulated–they really did all the work but hopefully I’ll get to the point where I can do it myself. Here’s what we recorded:
