The very next thing…

Tomorrow we’ll begin installing in earnest–there are lots of questions remaining–hope we can figure it all out!

Next thing…

So, I finished the wall tonight, now I just have to get it to Shift Space–that could be tricky! Tomorrow I’ll take down a couple of saw horses, then get a couple of sheets of luan and some saran wrap stuff (what do they call it when it comes on a really big roll?), wrap it up a little, make it safe to travel. I want to be able to flip it and set it on the saw horses, then finish the wiring. Hopefully, I’ll get it down there on Friday or Saturday. I wonder if it will stand on it’s own–I kinda doubt it!

The wall is finished!

what I think will happen…

I don’t think I have enough flowers…this makes me sad, but I’ll finish the first wall for sure, then maybe do an all green wall–plus, I think I will bring down a couple of topiary-like sculptures and it will be interesting–wish I’d thought about those sculptures earlier–it would have been really fun to put photo sensors on them–maybe there’s still time!

Well–I took Keith’s suggestion and used 1 x 4’s and nails to strengthen the foam–thought everything went swimmingly, ’til I turned the board over and the 1 x 4’s fell right out! So, now it’s off to the hardware store for some Tub & Tile or–something to make it stick–I wonder if screws would have held any better?

just when you think…

it’s all figured out–today I started to think about the weight of the flowers on the foam and whether a 2″ x 4′ x 8′ sheet filled with flowers would have enough integrity to stand straight–the flowers will add considerable weight. I’m worried that the board will break (even if it bowed out it would be bad). I’m also really worried that I don’t have enough flowers to cover the whole space. So, several solutions suggest themselves–one is to build a support for the wall–that wouldn’t be too hard–just some 2 x 4’s. Another possibility–use the opposite wall–the one with the doorway–this might offer some interesting changes in the way a viewer experiences the piece. For one thing, you wouldn’t actually see the wall until you turned to leave the room–which seems cool to me. I’m guessing this way I would use at least one less sheet of foam. I think the sensors and lighting would work the same way as originally planned. Anyway, I’m going to think about this at least overnight. What does anyone else think?

where we are…

Let’s see–we’re having a few technological glitches–something to do with the amplification of the sound (I think)–Josh has this under control and I don’t expect it to be a problem. The programming of the chip seems relatively simple since Invisible Drum guys posted their code. So, what remains–I have to build the wall–I looked at the space again last night and I would guess that the wall will be approximately 8′ x 12′–so, 3 sheets of foam (@22.00/sheet) and thousands of flowers–I think I have enough flowers (hope I do)—I’m anxious to begin–and I guess I will start by unsoldering the flowers I had already prepared–the wires seem to be touching–I can solve this by either shrink wrapping the wires before I insert them into the flowers–or even easier, just separate the wires and stick them directly into the foam–I’ll think about that some more.
